On Thursday 19, Friday 20 and Saturday, March 21, 2009, a major international antiquarian book and print fair took place in the heart of Maastricht for the third time.

A thirty renowned antiquarian houses from home and abroad offered the best of their collections. All to be admired in the 15th century Gothic Saint Jans’ church on the Vrijthof.
This Fair will took place at a moment that the prestigious TEFAF opened its doors in the MECC in Maastricht.

MABP in 2008 was a true viewing pleasure for the spoiled fans.
There was an equally rare and beautiful atlas Janssonius offered. Beautiful Jugendstil prints alongside rare and bibliophile books were to be admired.
Similarly, many antique prints, topographical maps and decorative art.

The organization found that the diversity and quality offered in 2008 was surpassed in 2009.

This exhibition has been organised in close cooperation between MABP foundation, Museum aan het Vrijthof and Bookstore Selexyz Dominicanen in Maastricht

The exhibition could be visited from March 12th thru May 3rd 2009 and gave special attention:
- on March 15 when Clément Mantz (sun of the famous Werner Mantz) was be interviewed in bookstore Selexyz at 13:30 hours
- during the Maastricht Antiquarian Book & Print Fair March 19 – March 21 2009

Maastricht Antiquarian Book & Print Fair 2009

Evénement unique pour les bibliophiles et amateurs d'illustrations, en plein cœur de Maastricht.
Simultanément au salon TEFAF, la fondation Stichting MABP organise pour la troisième fois son grand salon international des antiquaires dans l'église Sint Janskerk sur le Vrijthof (XVème siècle). Une trentaine de maisons d'antiquités renommées, originaires des Pays-Bas et de l'étranger, y présenteront les plus beaux objets de leurs collections. Les visiteurs de ce salon pourront y admirer des éditions rares et des ouvrages de luxe de toute beauté. Ils y trouveront également des atlas, des cartes géographiques et des globes anciens, sans oublier une collection de gravures, d'estampes modernes et de livres d'artiste.

A unique collection gathered by a Dutch collector

Autographs, photographs, postcards and curiosities of the international nobility.
13 Albums with photographs, postcards, letters and curiosities accompanied by information about each member of the collected noble persons. Most of the photographs and letters have been originally signed.
At least 850 photographs, letters or postcards from members of nobility have been signed.

The collection contains members of the Houses Bourbon, Habsburg, Hohenzollern, Liechtenstein. Lippe-Biesterfeld, Oranje-Nassau, Saksen-Coburg and many others but also kings, queens, princes, princesses, sheikhs, sultans from outside Europe for example King Abdallah (Jordan), King Abdul Allah Bin Abdul Aziz (Saudi Arabia), Norodom Sihanouk (Cambodia). Examples of other famous noble persons:Princess Grace (Monaco), Hoessein (Jordan), Soraya (Persia), Prince Bernhard van Lippe-Biesterveld (The Netherlands), Juan Samaranch, Harold Wilson.

Very fine and attractive copy

Halma, Francois: Het Kasteel van Aigermont, en d'Omleggende Landtstreeken in de Heerlykheit van Nederkan, nevens de Stadt Maastricht; in heldendicht afgeschetst.

Leeuwarden, François Halma, 1715. 4to, contemporary half calf binding with marbled boards.  [20]+60pp. Titlepage in red and black with engraved printer's device, three double-page engravings, 2 woodcut tailpieces, and 4 decorative woodcut initials.
First and only edition of this remarcable poem in praise about the Chateau Agimont (Aigermont) of Neerkanne near Maastricht and dedicated to Daniel Wolf, Baron van Dopff. Chateau Aigermont (now called Chateau Neercanne) was built on an Roman fortress and was destroyed by in 1465 by the armies of Liège. Despite of the renovations of various owners the chateau became ruinious till Baron van Dopff (Military Governor of Maastricht) bought the ruinous chateau in 1697 and expanded and renovated it. The chateau is built stepped on the side of a hill (unique in the Netherlands) and it and the mine remain popular tourist attractions.

Manuscript van het Fort Sint Pieter.

“Profil du fort de St. Pierre a Mastrick”
Profielschets in gewassen pentekening en aquarel op verger papier met in het midden boven in een cartouche een legenda in het frans. Daarin puntsgewijs opgenomen de onderdelen van het fort. Links beneden een schaalverdeling. Aan de achterzijde staat de titel van de tekening met een nummeraanduiding (No.17) en een onduidelijke signering. “Profil du fort de St. Pierre a Mastrick enuoyé par les sr. LeNoir de l’ordre de M. de la Croix, de Liege ee Se Feuvrier 1702”. Afmeting: 49x31 cm.

N.B. Met de bouw van het fort werd aangevangen in september 1701. Aangezien dit document gedateerd is in februari 1702, mag men aannemen dat de tekening dateert uit de bouwfase. Gezien de geheimhouding rond de bouw van vestingwerken mag dit dokument als belangrijk en daarmee van militair-historisch belang zijn voor de stad Maastricht.

Antiquariaat en Galerie "De Bovenste Plank" liet op de beurs een aantal werken van Werner Mantz laten zien. Het gaat om een samengestelde collectie uit een aantal particuliere verzamelingen met stadsaanzichten, portretten en enkele architectuurfoto's.
Tevens was er een verkoopexpositie bij "De Bovenste Plank" vanaf 12 maart. Lees meer <hierover>
De expositie was ook afgestemd op de opening van de expositie "Werner Mantz aan het Vrijthof" in het Museum aan het Vrijthof die eveneens startte op 12 maart.

Ton Stille eerste Antiquaar van het Jaar

De Maastrichtse antiquaar Ton Stille is door het blad Boekenpost uitverkozen tot de eerste ‘Antiquaar van het Jaar’.
Boekenpost is een tweemaandelijks verschijnend tijdschrift voor liefhebbers van boeken, prenten, strips en boekcuriosa.
Eind februari kwam nummer honderd uit. Ter gelegenheid daarvan is deze jaarlijks terugkerende verkiezing ingesteld.
Caspar Wechgelaer schreef een mooi artikel.

Werner Mantz aan het Vrijthof - Exhibition 12 March - 3 Mai / Tentoonstelling 12 maart t/m 3 mei 2009

Sinds 22 januari 2009 heet Museum Spaans Gouvernement Museum aan het Vrijthof. Met deze nieuwe naam benadrukt het museum de ligging aan dit bijzondere plein.
